What is it?

Nordic Walking originated from summer training for cross-country skiers. It is not the same as walking with trekking poles. Nordic walking uses specially designed poles and a specific technique to work the whole body, including the core and upper body muscles as well as the legs. Nordic walking can be enjoyed at different levels and is a complete form of exercise for everyone whatever your age or level of fitness. Nordic walking is the ultimate ‘green gym’ experience allowing you to enjoy all the benefits of exercising in the fresh air and countryside.

Nordic walking benefits

  • Uses 90% of your skeletal muscles
  • Develops all over strength and endurance
  • Increases circulation and heart and lung capacity.
  • Strengthens and tones your arms, shoulders and back
  • Uses more energy, burning up to 46% more calories than ordinary walking.
  • Feels easier and less tiring, because the effort is spread across the whole body.
  • Supports your body, thus sparing your hips and knees.
  • Releases tension in your back, arms and shoulders so is great for those who sit at a computer or who drive long distances.

Who is it suitable for?

Nordic walking is an effective accessible and sociable activity suited to all ages and fitness levels. As the effort of your upper body controls how intensely you Nordic walk, you can walk at the same speed as others whilst exercising at your own level. This makes Nordic walking a very inclusive and enjoyable way to exercise. It is also

  • Ideal for people who haven’t exercised for a while, or who dislike sports or gym activities.
  • Particularly suitable for older people because the poles provide added support and confidence.
  • Great for fitness enthusiasts who like to try new things, or for cross training for their main sport.
